Rescue workers recovered the body of a woman Monday afternoon
from Magazine Branch, the creek that runs alongside Garrison
Avenue in Charleston.
Some boys playing along the creek discovered the body at about
2 p.m. Monday.
A woman who lives across the road from the site said the boys
and their father knocked on her door and asked her to call
911. She declined to give her name to a reporter
Few details were made available Monday about the woman, her
name or the circumstances of her death, although a police
detective spoke briefly to reporters who gathered in the rain
near the site.
“We don’t know enough about the body to know about injuries
yet,” said Sgt. S.A. Cooper, chief of detectives for the
Charleston Police Department.
“The Charleston Police Department received a report of a
body,” he said. “When they arrived on the scene, they did find
a body lying in the creek, deceased.

“It’s very early in the investigation. At this point, we have
no idea if foul play was involved.”
He said the woman was probably in her 40s.
Police also were unclear from the woman’s position in the creek
whether she might have drowned, or how long she had been lying there.
“We have tentatively identified the body,” Cooper said, but he
declined to release the name.
A police shift commander later said police think the woman might have
died of natural causes.
Several area residents who stopped by the scene said they had seen a
woman with long brown hair walking up and down the road in recent
days.
