An elderly husband and wife are still in the hospital after their car collided head-on with a UPS truck.
All lanes of MacCorkle Avenue near Montrose Drive in South Charleston were temporarily shut down after the three-vehicle accident, which happened at about 9 a.m. Thursday.
A red Buick Park Avenue, driven by 81-year-old Raymond Amerson of Charleston, was traveling west on MacCorkle Avenue when the car stopped and attempted to turn left onto Short Street, said Patrolman Jeremy Burns of the South Charleston Police Department.
The vehicle went into the path of a UPS truck traveling east and then swerved and spun around, striking a Toyota Tacoma truck that was westbound, Burns said.
The UPS truck, driven by 26-year-old Amanda Brunner of Charleston, hit and knocked over a light and electric pole, police said.
Brunner was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital and had bruising to her legs, Burns said. She was released later Thursday, hospital staff said.
Amerson and his wife Emogean, who was a passenger, also were both taken to CAMC. Burns said the couple had to be extracted from their vehicle by emergency crews.
Both had been admitted to regular hospital rooms this morning and were still under evaluation.
The driver of the Tacoma, David Rowe of Danville, and his son, David Rowe II, a passenger, were not injured in the accident and were able to drive the truck away from the scene, Burns said.
Traffic was diverted for several hours off MacCorkle Avenue at Patrick Street while crews cleared the scene.
