Furniture store burns:

A defunct used furniture store on one of the
busiest streets in Nitro caught fire Friday afternoon and was eventually
demolished, firefighters said. At 5:35 p.m., Nitro Fire Department got
called to the former Ace Furniture Sales, 2901 First Ave. and found
heavy smoke pouring from the building and a nearby storage facility,
Capt. Ron King said. The cause is still under investigation, but it is
being treated as suspicious, he said. Nitro fire investigators had been
told that vagrants might have been spotted around the building earlier
in the day, but they never found anyone. Firefighters extinguished the
blaze within an hour, then had the building torn down to keep the
structure from being a nuisance, King said. Nearby businesses suffered
some water and smoke damage. |
