State troopers tell us three people trying to steal chemicals from
a mine cause an ammonia leak in Kanawha County.
It happened late Wednesday night on Slaughter's Creek. That's near
Chelyan and the Paul White Chevrolet dealership.
Troopers tell us three people broke into a mine trying to steal
some chemicals. They say those people broke the valve on a
container of anhydrous ammonium and some spilled into the creek.
Troopers have one of the three suspects in custody. Troopers say
he told them they were trying to steal the chemicals to make meth.
That suspect is now being treated for ammonia exposure.
Police are still looking for the two other suspects.
The ammonia leak has been shut off, and troopers say they don't
believe it poses any danger to the community. Earlier 9-1-1
dispatchers told us that seven people in the area were exposed to
the chemical, and two were taken to the hospital.
