A lost 8-year-old boy trekked eight miles of trails through the Kanawha State Forest before rescuers found him late Thursday.
Brandon Maddy was missing for over five hours when he was found walking a road bordering the forest, said Loudendale Volunteer Fire Chief Frank Fizer.
"He was playing on the hillside. We had the dogs out [and were] playing with them," said Brandon's mother, Glenda Maddy, shortly after he had been found. "He got lost very quickly."
Maddy got separated from his mother shortly after 4 p.m., Fizer said. The boy followed the Pauley trail and apparently never walked off into the forest.
"He stayed on the trails until he hit the top of the mountain, then he stayed on the boundary road for at least five miles," Fizer said.
More than 50 people turned out to help search, Fizer said. Davis Creek and Alum Creek volunteer fire departments, along with the State Police and Kanawha County Sheriff's Department all responded to the scene.
State Police and HealthNet helicopters searched the forest from above, he said.
Many bicyclists also combed the trails, searching for Brandon, he said.
Rescuers found the boy walking the road about 10 p.m. He was thirsty and tired, but otherwise OK, Fizer said.
After Brandon Maddy was found, his mother sat in the Kanawha Emergency Operations Center. She said he wouldn't be shy about telling everyone who searched for him what happened.
"There aren't words to say how thankful I am for everyone who came out," Glenda Maddy said of those part of the rescue effort. "They are all very special, everyone that helped."
Brandon arrived at the Operations Center about 10:30 p.m., sitting in the front seat of a pickup truck. A rescue worker and search dog sat in the truck's bed.
"That's a good thing," Fizer said. "A kid, you don't put any price on him."
