A fire today in Kanawha City marked the third time the same house has caught fire, emergency officials said.
A two-story house on Chesterfield Avenue is considered a total loss. Firefighters said the secluded house has caught fire about three times, indicating the possibility of foul play. ..
The vacant house on Chesterfield Avenue is considered a total loss, according to firefighters.
The fire was reported about 5:15 a.m. by several motorists who could see flames shooting out of the windows from multiple nearby roads, said Charleston Fire Capt. Timothy Robinson.
Metro 911 dispatched two fire engines to the vacant house, but by the time the first one arrived the structure was already fully involved, Robinson said.
"Because of the location, (the fire) had a good start on us," he said.
This is the third time the abandoned house has caught fire, adding to the suspicion it could be arson, he added.
The house, a two-story brick frame house at the 6600 block of Chesterfield Avenue, was built about 12 years ago, but there hasn't been a steady occupant since, he said.
There was not much, if any, furniture in the house, he said.  There is a couch, a roll of carpet and a stack of firewood in the front yard, indicating the possibility of a somewhat recent habitant, he said.
The home, located behind Kmart, is largely secluded and sits on the opposite side of the railroad tracks.
Black smoke stains outline the window frames, and most of the white shutters have been melted away.
Firefighters opened both doors of the two-car garage, revealing only a small amount of wood inside. The windows of the garage had also been boarded up prior to the fire.
Charleston firefighters are investigating the cause and origin of the blaze.
Chesterfield Avenue was closed for about two hours in front of the home.
