A Fort Hill area woman
died Thursday afternoon in Charleston's first fatal fire of 2008.
Stacey Mullins, 33, of
816 Churchill Drive, was pulled from her home with a pulse but was not
breathing shortly after noon Thursday, said Rodney Winter, assistant chief for
the Charleston Fire Department.
Winter said Mullins died
a short time later, apparently of smoke inhalation.
Firefighters remained at the
house Thursday afternoon attempting to determine the cause of the fire.
..
Charleston police and
fire departments from both Charleston and South Charleston responded to the
fire at about 12:19 p.m.
Winter said the blaze was
brought under control quickly, but when firefighters entered the house a mass
of flames at the top of the stairs to the second floor prevented both Mullins'
escape and rescuers' attempts to reach her.
Firefighters quickly got
a ladder up to a second-story window and were able to get to Mullins.
Winter said Mullins lived
in the house with her mother, who was not home when the fire broke out. A dog
was also lost in the blaze.
Firefighters remained at
the house Thursday afternoon attempting to determine the cause of the fire.
