John H. Smoot, 80, of Cedar Grove passed away January 20, 2008, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness.
He was a maintenance supervisor, employed by the DuPont Plant in Belle for 37 years.
He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and in the West Virginia National Guard. John was in the U.S. Army Reserve with 32 years of service in the military. He was a member of the Belle VFW and the DuPont Belle Plant 25-Year Club. John joined the Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department in 1951 and served as chief from 1961 until he passed away in January 2008. He was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County and a Protestant.
John was preceded in death by his parents, George and Clara B. Raike Smoot.
 
 
He is survived by his wife, Lois Robinson Smoot of Cedar Grove; son, John R. Smoot and companion, Tanya Faulkner, of Scott Depot; and grandsons, Jonathan Smoot and Cody Smoot, both of Scott Depot.
John was a mentor to Kevin Bess of Cedar Grove throughout his life and especially in fire and ambulance service.
Also surviving are a brother, George Smoot and wife, Daisy, of Mason; and nephews, David Moore and his wife, Clem, of Elkview, Michael Moore of Oak Hill, and Roger Moore of Cedar Grove.
Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, January 24, at the Charleston Civic Center Little Theatre with the Rev. John Massey and Chaplain Mike Jarrett officiating. Entombment will follow in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service Thursday at the Charleston Civic Center Little Theatre.
